Biography


German painter

First he was trained by his elder brother Andreas Achenbach (1815-1910). From 1835 until 1841 he studied at the academy of arts in Düsseldorf under J.W. Schirmer (1807-1863).

In 1850 he travelled for the first time through Italy. There he met Arnold Böcklin (1827-1901) and they worked together for a while in the area of Olevano, which inspired both of them.

At all he visited Italy for at least eight times with stays in Rome, Naples, Verona, Venice and Padua.

From 1863 until 1872 he worked as an art teacher at the academy of arts in Düsseldorf.
