Arno Rafael Minkkinen, (finnischer Fotogaf, lebt und arbeitet in den USA)
Seit über 40 Jahren setzt der finnisch-amerikanische Fotograf Arno Rafael Minkkinen fotografisch in erster Linie seinen Körper ein, um surrealistische Ansichten des Menschen und der Natur ins Bild zu setzen. Die in focus Galerie zeigt in dieser Ausstellung eine Auswahl seiner frappierenden Natur- und Körperstudien, mit denen Minkkinen seit Jahrzehnten das Verhältnis von Mensch und Natur auf originelle und durchaus auch amüsante Weise auslotet. Arno Rafael Minkkinen spielt mir Formen und mit Größenverhältnissen und hält seine Kreationen in faszinierenden Schwarzweißfotografien fest.
In der Fotografie der Gegenwart eine bestimmte Richtung zu etablieren erfordert mehr als ein gutes Auge für das Medium. Es bedeutet vielmehr aus Hunderten von Bildern jenes herauszusuchen, das die eigenen Intentionen am besten ausdrückt, so dass ein Werk entstehen kann, das nicht nur für andere eine Offenbarung darstellt, sondern auch der eigenen Inspiration und Erkenntnis dient. Minkkinen ist sowohl Fotograf und Bildermacher, als auch Künstler, der eine an der Gegenwart orientierte Sichtweise auf die Welt einnimmt.

Biographie

Arno Rafael Minkkinen (*1945) erhielt seinen Master of Fine Art (MFA) in Fotografie an der Rhode Island School of Design. Seit Mitte der 1970er Jahre ist er weltweit als Hochschullehrer tätig und arbeitete zudem als Kurator und Essayist. Die offensichtlich nicht nachbearbeiteten Selbstporträts in der Landschaft sind nunmehr einem internationalen Publikum durch Bücher, Zeitschriften, Vorträge und Ausstellungen bekannt. Zu seinen Monografien zählen: Frostbite (Morgan & Morgan, 1978); Waterline (Marval, Aperture, and Otava, 1994), Grand Prix du Livre at the 25th Rencontres d'Arles; Body Land (Motta, Nathan, and the Smithsonian Institution Press, 1997-1999); SAGA (Chronicle Books, 2005) und Homework: The Finnish Photographs, 1973 to 2008 (Like Publishing, Ltd., 2008). Er erhielt den Spezialpreis der Jury beim zweiten Lianzhou International Photography Festival in China. Gegenwärtig ist er Professor für Kunst an der University of Massachusetts, Lowell und lehrt an der Aalto Universität in Helsinki. 2006 wurde Minkkinen mit dem Finnish National Art Prize in Photography ausgezeichnet. Er ist in vielen bedeutenden Sammlungen in Museen weltweit vertreten.
