Further informations:

We are very pleased to mark the beginning of our cooperation with Günther Förg with a comprehensive exhibition of his paintings. We will present recent works and selected portraits from as far back as the 1970s. The exhibition will be supplemented by a catalogue including a text by Rudi Fuchs.

Günther Förg (b. 1952 in Füssen/Germany, since 1999 professor at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts), making use of various materials and media, combines photography, painting and sculpture to create complex installations. Besides large-scale photo series and wall paintings, assembled from monochrome colour planes or striped patterns, the artist’s work, since the middle of the 1980s, also has taken the form of bronze reliefs and bronze sculptures, portraits on lead, and graphics. In his Bleibilder (Lead Pictures) the need is being satisfied of setting opposites in relation to each other in new constellations of unity and totality, form and colour finding new balance. In his graphic works the artist combines the unique qualities of various techniques, often resorting to only a few strokes and fleeting lines. Here, as well as in other works, a characteristic mode of thinking and working may be made out by way of which Förg is looking for fundamentally new approaches to form, colour and expression. Since about 1992 he has created a series of paintings and works, known as Gitterbilder (Grid Paintings), which incorporate the crucial aspects of painting in their most concentrated form. In Förg’s most recent portraits - appearing almost pointilistic - the brushstrokes, applied in spots and according to changing rhythms, amalgamate into colour clusters, without closing up the painting ground though.

Förg has been present on the international art scene since the 1980s, took part in documenta IX in 1992, and has had exhibitions at numerous museums in Europe and America, such as at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, the Renaissaissance Society Chicago, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Castello di Rivoli, the Landesmuseum Joanneum Graz, the Secession and the Wittgenstein House in Vienna, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Lenbachhaus and the Staatsgalerie in Munich, the Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst Ghent, the Fundacao de Serralves Porto, the Museo Nacional Reina Sofia Madrid, the Arken Museum Denmark, etc.
