I am very pleased to announce Mona Breede’s forthcoming solo exhibition at the Plauen Art Association:
Der durchlebte Raum (The Space We Live Through) - Photographs by Mona Breede
The backgrounds Mona Breede chooses for her photographs are man-made urban structures. Squares, streets and walls appear in richly contrasting light and create a stage-like space, with individuals or groups of people moving around in the forefront. The stride of the people she portrays follows their own rhythm, a pace determined in turn by their culture, origin, upbringing and physical and spiritual condition. The rhythms generated by these individuals come together and cause diverse intercessions to occur within the space we are called upon to observe. These intercessions, i.e. this interaction among individuals, is the true theme of Breede’s work.
A further level is created by the observers themselves, who have lived through countless stories during the course of their lives. In these pictures, they will recognize reflections and variations of the world they experience as their own. Here is an artist whose photographs invite us to stop and think. Alongside many examples of strangeness, contradictions and tensions in the lives people share, she also points to the carefree and cheerful moments in our every-day life.
As an artist, Mona Breede seeks to achieve striking composition as well as an ideal combination of light and action within a split second. Her works are planned precisely and in great detail. They condense temporal and spacial sequences into a series or a single picture.
Mona Breede was born in 1968 in Kiel. From 1988 to 1989, she completed an internship at the Photography Department of the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg.
Breede trained as a photographer at the Bayerische Staatslehranstalt für Photographie in Munich. Subsequently, she studied with Rolf Sachsse and Thomas Struth at the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe. From 2001 to 2002, she taught at the Merkurakademie in Karlsruhe. At present, she lives and works in Karlsruhe.
