Losnummer: 4563

This extraordinary and rare collection of photographs is characterized by the photographer's fine sense of composition and choice of images. The beautifully printed photographs were taken by Franz Schade, a German teacher at the Tongji University (Tóngji Dàxué) in Shanghai, who apparently accompanied German visitors through China and the Japanese occupied zone of China (Man-chou-kuo). The first group (circa 40 photos) of the collection show many images of the university such as the campus with the main buildings, teachers, professors and students, all dated 1937. One curious image shows a National Socilaist event probably at Point Island near Shanghai where a German HJ-Heim (HJ youth center) and other German settlements were located.
The second group contains a large range of topics and places such as Hangzhou and the province Zhejiang with inhabitants, landscapes and temples, farms with harvesting activities, comorant fishing on the Chekiang River, rice terraces, street sellers, Buddhist monks and Taoist priests. The city of Shaoxing is also shown, the Chien Tang River with houseboats and fishing, the animal figures of the Ming graves at Nanking, as well as many views of Beijing such as the Forbidden City, sculptures, buildings, bridges and pavillons. Another smaller group of photographs (25) were taken in Japan which show the last part of the trip. Nice views of landscapes, temples and women. – Fine, tonal prints in very good to near excellent condition.
