 Galerie Martin Mertens is pleased to present “Field of Exercise”, the latest solo exhibition of New York and Amsterdam based artist Daniel Bodner.
In Daniel Bodner’s latest paintings he returns to the human figure. We see youthful, exuberant athletes exercising in groups. But these paintings are not rendered in a naturalist way. He paints on and strips away layers, sometimes scraping them back to the canvas. The surface textures and murky colors reference decayed or over exposed black and white photographs, and appear to have resulted from the technological processes of photography – the toners, fixatives and emulsions – rather than from nature itself.
As a meditation on the Human Condition, Bodner juxtaposes these youthful figures with the decaying old photographs to create a visual metaphor for the passage of time and the impermanence of human life.
