Mayumi Lake
“Poo-Chi” series

My artwork deals with the interaction between the real and imaginary. I confront viewers with images that suggest a pre-pubescent sexuality. This is accomplished through the careful framing of adult bodies. These images arouse complex emotional responses in the viewer: excitement, fear, disgust. Extended viewing reveals the illusion. Seeing is deceiving. What, then, of the various emotions triggered in the viewer?

As a young girl growing up in Japan, I was controlled by an absurd set of conflicting expectations: well-behaved “good girl” or sex kitten? I question the Japanese female sexuality inhibition, yet it is still in my system and mind. That causes me to take the approach of mimicry.

Poo-chi is my name for the transformation of a particular part of the adult body into something that provocatively suggests a young girl’s body. Poo-Chi, a series of such photographs, elicits the forbidden sexual desire: an adult’s sexual desire for a child. Child desires to be sexual being and adult fears to desire the child as a sexual being. Can the desires be controlled? Poo-Chi seduces the viewer into a consideration of the ubiquity of these forbidden desires. The imagery seduces the act of penetration, however there are no orifices to penetrate – only in the viewer’s mind.

KLAPPENTEXT

Mayumi Lake’s series of color photographs focuses on the wakinoshita, presenting this often neglected part of the body in a discomforting new light. The wakinoshita Lake portrays with such intimacy and originality are shown in a wide array of "poses"; dressed with crochet, lace, embroidery, fake fur, these obviously adult bits of body take on a diverting, playful look. But underneath the soft and feminine drapes nestle the dark hairs and folds of flesh that give Lake's work a decidedly unsettling edge. As with all illusion, there is more here than meets the eye: the viewer is drawn time and again to take another, deeper look. Poo-Chi opens with an introduction by Joanna Frueh.
