Biography


Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld is the brother of Ludwig Ferdinand (1788-1853) and the son of the painter H.V. Schnorr von Carolsfeld (1764-1841), who was the director of the academy of arts in Leipzig. First he was educated by his father, but from 1811 he studied under H.Fr. Füger (1751-1818) at the academy of arts in Vienna. He followed the style of Ferd. Olivier (1785-1841) and J.A. Koch (1768-1839), and came into the circle of the Romantic artists around Fr. Schlegel (1767-1845) in Vienna.

1817 he became a member of the 'Lukasbund'. He travelled to Italy and got in contact with the circle of the Nazarenes in Rome, especially with J.Fr. Overbeck (1789-1869) and P. Cornelius (1783-1867). 1827 he moved to Munich, following an appointment by King Ludwig I tas a teacher at the academy of arts. He was entrusted with the task of painting new frecos for the Residence of the King. 1846 he became the director of the picture gallery and professor at the academy of arts in Dresden.
