Zum Künstler

Nanny Still is one of Finland’s most colourful designers. She is responsible for many midcentury design classics, such as the well-known "koristepullo", the tall flasks who have become icons of Finnish glass design. She works with the same clear elegance in a variety of different materials: metal, glass and ceramics not only for iittala nowadays, but also in her own studio as a glass artist. She has mastered almost everything to do with art and industrial design, and was awarded the Pro Finlandia medal in 1972 and the Diploma of Honour at the Triennale in Milan in 1954.
There are several pieces and series from her career that received specific attention. The "Midsummer Pole," designed in 1957 was a decorative vertical piece with an alternating diamond and circle pattern. It was made of blue, violet and orange glass. Her popular 1959 "Harlequin" series of goblets and jars had cone-shaped lids, a recurring shape in her work. In 1960 she designed the "Saturn" series of vases that came in three sizes and were also produced as candlesticks. These low, squat vases were made in colors that she created, a deep golden yellow and a warm violet. Another set of candlesticks, "Ambra," was part of a traveling glass exhibit in the early 1960s. Still was a prolific designer and has, in addition to these pieces, a number of object in glass, wood and ceramics that were never necessarily known by name but were a substantial part of the prevailing domestic aesthetic of mid-century Finland.

Until 1976 she designed countless sets of tumblers, yet she was not afraid to experiment.

She introduced many innovations in the use of colour and technique.

In the late 1950's Nanny Still moved to Belgium and started designing for companies like Cerabel (Belgium), Heinrich Porzellan (Germany) and Rosenthal (Germany).

Nanny Still earned herself a reputation designing a varied range of industrial products in a variety of materials such as glass, metal, porcelain and wood.
