In the 1980s Erwin Bohatsch was one of the most prominent painters of the Neue Wilde
movement in Austria that, as a counter movement to the conceptual art of the 1970s, reinvented
painting as an aesthetic phenomenon. Reflecting on the first modernity his subjects were characterised by his interest in ethnographic motifs. Since the 1990s Bohatsch's portraits have turned increasingly
more abstract almost to the point of appearing nearly monochrome panels. Bohatsch turns his concentrated attention to the interaction of light and colour, the determining aspects of painting.
