Die Faszination für Japan kann man den Arbeiten von Georg Matthes anmerken. Seine Bildsprache und die Ästhetik lassen sich wie eine Biographie lesen. Matthes Wurzeln sind spürbar in der Manga-Welt zu finden. 1972, nach seinem Umzug nach Japan, beginnt er seine Ausbildung bei Ishinomori Shotaro zum Cartoon Zeichner.
In den darauf folgenden Jahren macht er sich in Japan einen Namen als Zeichner mit regelmäßigen Karikaturen und Artikeln in der größten überregionalen Tageszeitung „Yomiuri“.

Der Japanspezialist begibt sich parallel dazu auch in das Filmmetier: er ist als Moderator und Schauspieler im japanischen Fernsehen vor und als Produzent hinter der Kamera aktiv.
Der gebürtige Düsseldorfer startet eine eigene Videoproduktion für modernes Ballett.
Die Tanzwelt wird ihn lange Zeit beschäftigen. Bis heute hat er mehr als 450 Tanzfilme und Filme von Bühnenaufführungen geschaffen.

Seit den 80er Jahren verarbeitet er die Tanzeindrücke nicht nur filmisch sondern auch zeichnerisch in seinen Mangas (Cartoons) und fotografisch. Die Bewegung des Films kombiniert der 1942 geborene Künstler mit der Farbigkeit und den grafischen Elementen aus seiner Manga-Zeit. So hat er seinen eigenen Stil entwickelt, der zugleich plakativ wie auch leicht ist.

Seit 1996 ist Georg Matthes zumindest teilweise wieder zurück in Deutschland mit Ausstellungen unter anderem im Ludwig Forum Aachen, dem Staatlichen Museum in
St. Petersburg, Tivat Montenegro und zahlreichen internationalen Galerien.

Aber Japan ist nicht vergessen. Er produziert Dokumentarfilme über Japan, japanische Ballettaufführungen im Tanzhaus NRW, Düsseldorf, Rockkonzerte zum Japanjahr in Düsseldorf und unterrichtet Jugendliche in der Kunst des Mangazeichnens.
