Meyerowitz entdeckt ab 1962 an der Seite von Garry Winogrand die ungeheure Faszination urbanen Lebens für die Fotografie.
Sein bevorzugtes Terrain ist dabei die 5th Avenue und deren spezielle Lichtverhältnisse. Die darin eingetauchten Passanten sind keine Flaneure. Zielgerichtet durch die Großstadtstraßen eilend, scheinen sie vielmehr an mehreren Schauplätzen gleichzeitig zu agieren. Mit derselben nervösen Energie hält Meyerowitz komplexe Szenen fest und komprimiert sie durch exakten Einsatz von Perspektive, Farbe und Lichttemperatur. Das Wort der Stunde ist "tough". Und so treten die Fotografen dem Schauspiel entgegen, das ihnen auf den Straßen geboten wird.
