Such figure panels, representing powerful clan spirits, nggwalndu, were displayed in groups in the men’s house, korombo, in the Abelam area during a long series of initiation rituals, sakindu, which could take from twenty to thirty years to complete. They are painted in colours considered by the Abelam to have magical properties giving the figures their beauty and power. They are frequently surmounted by one or more hornbills, one of the Abelam’s most important totemic symbols.
