This is the first solo show of newcomer Nata Lee Hahn .
Nata Lee Hahn was born in 1979 in Hong Kong.
2000-2001 Chelsea College of Art and Design, London. Since 2003 Academy for Art and Design (Hochschule für Gestaltung), Pforzheim, in the class Prof. Erich Reiling. 2005 grant Rhode Island School of Design, Rhode Island, USA.
At first glance Nata Lee Hahn's work seems to be colorful and striking. They show i.e. small, innocent looking chinese girls in traditional clothing. The appearence of the large scale paintings seems to be definately assigned to Chinese Painting trough choice of color and imagery. At closer inspection one can easyly also find refences to the western world: kimono and ice-cream, buddha and bluejeans, geisha and cigars.
Nata Lee Hahn plays perfectly with cultural imagery from her on CV: born and grown up in Hong Kong (as the daughter of a chinese mother and a german-tschek father), later moved to Germany, she feels home in both traditional and contemporay (pop)cultures (she sings in a group and has a contract with Sony). Therfore she not only manages to deal with the fractures of that two cultures in her paintings, but lets them melt togehter in a playful way, makes us believe that verything belongs togehter in a natural way. |
