Pavel Tchelitchew (1898-1957)
Pavel Tchelitchew descended from a noble family that lived near Moscow. He was interested in ballet and art from an early age. In 1920 he left Russia and lived in Berlin from 1921 to 1923. He subsequently moved to Paris, where he met Gertrude Stein. In 1930 he had his first exhibition of drawings at the newly opened Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1934, he settled in the city with his partner, the writer Henri Ford. From 1940 to 1947, he made illustrations to the Surrealist magazine ‘View’, which was edited by Ford. His most important work is ‘Hide and Seek’ (1940-1942), located in the Museum of Modern Art. Tchelitchew is buried at the famous Parisian Père Lachaise cemetery.
Condition
Small pin holes in edges consisten with artist’s process. Not inspected outside of the frame. Verso of frame features two past exhibition labels. In overall very good condition.
