German painter
He was the great-nephew of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. First he studied architecture in Berlin but he soon changed to landscape painting. Through C. F. Sohn he met W. von Schadow, whom he followed to Düsseldorf. Soon after he arrived in the rhine area he founded - together with J. W. Schirmer - a new artists' association ('Landschaftlicher Componirverein').
From 1833 until 1843 he studied at the academy of arts in Düsseldorfer, and from the very beginning of his studies he was regarded as a real talent.
Influenced by W. von Schadow he made history paintings and for the first time he painted historical landscapes.
1858 he became a director of the art gallery in Karlsruhe and as the successor of J.W. Schirmer president of the academy of arts as well. This position he held until 1866.
